9 different shapes are used to allow cards to be pulled out into specific groups of notes. It is so convenient, as a band teacher with large classes, to say, "Everyone take out the TRIANGLE flash cards and work on them with your partner."
Or, if I want to teach the clarinet players in my band how to use the correct combination of left & right pinky keys in their D Major Scale, I can have the entire class take out the STAR cards to drill the scale while telling the clarinet players to use the first given fingerings for the high B and C# (rather than using the 2nd alternate fingerings).
