Band & Orchestra Flashcards for Music Assessment
As a band teacher I have wished for easy ways to assess my students on critical music knowledge and skills. I have created dozens of music worksheets, quizzes, unit tests, and assessments over the years. However, after using each of these in the classroom I have usually found them to be less effective for one reason or another, and have rarely reused them year after year. Reasons include poor formatting, ineffective question wording, less-than-perfect graphics, or most commonly incomplete scope of the essential learning targets.
This is why I have been delighted with the StepWise Band and Orchestra flash cards as assessment tools. I can instantly create my own music quizzes, tests, or assessments for music pitches, note names, and instrument fingerings. It literally takes seconds to do this in class, with no prior preparation! All I have to do is:
1. Choose the concert pitch notes I want to assess.
2. Write the corresponding numbers on the board.
3. Tell students whether I want them to focus on note names, fingerings, or other music elements, such as sharps, flats, accidentals, enharmonics, alternate fingerings, etc.
4. Set a timer and say "GO!"
Using these flashcards, students can quiz each other on the musical concepts, or they can practice on their own while I work my way around the class assessing their knowledge or skills myself. I can use a timer or allow unlimited time. I can record student scores as Pass/Fail or as specific assessment data like 12 out of 15, or 78% on student grades.
