Free Flute Fingering Chart
This free flute fingering chart will help young musicians quickly find the correct fingerings and alternate fingerings for every note in the essential range of the flute. The fingering charts in the back of most band method books do not show how the different octaves share the same fingering, making them less effective at helping students make sense of the notes and fingering on the flute. Also, unlike most fingering charts, THIS chart features the "thumb B-flat" key on most notes, instead of the pedagogically-incorrect "thumb B-natural" key, and provides instructions for how to correctly utilize each thumb key for optimal fingering speed.

As a bonus, everything fits easily on one page! This allows students in your band to keep this chart on their music stand and use it frequently as a quick reference. I like to print these stepwise fingering charts for my whole band on cardstock and pass them out in the first week of school, along with the fingering flashcards. It is a powerful combination! Download now by right-clicking the following link. Or, if you prefer a standard flute fingering chart with the B-natural lever thumb key, you can download the second file.

Flute Fingering Flashcards

Most beginning flute students start by learning to play F, then down the scale to B-flat. These particular fingerings are some of the most challenging and confusing on the flute, and so it is unfortunate for young flautists that band method books start with these 5 notes.

This beginning experience may lead many students to believe that all the fingerings on the flute are nonsensical, random, and confusing. However, the StepWise Flute Fingering Chart (above) can help them see that they are sensibly and coherently organized.

The next step is to help them learn and memorize every note and fingering, and this is where the StepWise flashcards are so useful! After all, even many of our more advanced flute players tend to get mixed up on fingerings in the more extreme ranges, and with the more obscure accidentals. The best way to develop speedy and accurate sight reading is to practice naming and fingering the notes on these 32 flashcards over and over! Plus, the unique fingering graphics for each note will help them better understand how the Boehm system works on the flute.
