How to Play the Bassoon - Fingering Chart & Flashcards
Download the StepWise Bassoon Fingering Chart
This free Bassoon Fingering Chart will help young musicians quickly find the correct fingerings for every note in the essential range of the bassoon. The fingering charts in the back of most band method books do not show how the different octaves share the same fingering, making it much more challenging for students make sense of bassoon fingerings.
As a bonus, everything fits easily on one page! This allows students in your band to keep this chart on their music stand and use it frequently as a quick reference. I like to print these stepwise fingering charts for my whole band on cardstock and pass them out in the first week of school, along with the fingering flashcards. It is a powerful combination! Bassoon Fingering FlashcardsIt is pretty obvious that the bassoon has the most complicated fingering system of any other instrument. In fact, the system is so complicated that even professional bassoonists do not agree on the best fingering for many common notes. Young bassoonists therefore have quite a challenge learning just the notes of the Concert B-Flat scale. While fingering charts are an essential tool, the StepWise Bassoon flashcards are especially helpful because each fingering chart shows which keys are most importantly associated with each pitch (see below).
Compared to fingering charts, flashcards are also more helpful because they can be put next to each other in different orders to help students see the relationships between pitches, octaves, and their fingerings. These flashcards were developed with input from several professional bassoonists, and will help both beginning and more advanced players to learn, memorize, and master every note, note name, and fingering on the bassoon! |
